Digital Humanities and Knowledge Discovery with Data Mining
The digital humanities is the study of and research in humanities using computer-based tools. Knowledge discovery helps to explore the work of society's scholars more scientifically. Data mining is a process to discover patterns in large amounts of data by applying specific algorithms to big data. Data mining plays an essential role in digital humanities and knowledge discovery. Digital Humanities can help to capture, analyze and visualize the cultural heritage. It is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on data as a new type of cultural heritage. For the interpretation of the world, humanities focus on cultural artifacts left from people who lived before us. In other words, societies are about the analysis of human culture. On the other hand, knowledge discovery is about discovering patterns and constructing a logical story about the data based on these patterns. The development of data mining techniques has enabled us to accumulate enormous amounts of knowledge, organize it in databases, identify patterns, and discover new facts. For example, using these techniques to analyze literature by searching for themes, we are trying to find knowledge or meaning hidden inside texts. The digital humanities merge the two fields – humanities and knowledge discovery using computer databases to develop new ways to explore cultures from the past that aren't available through standard methods.
In today's knowledge-based society, gathering and synthesizing a total amount of data is fundamental to nearly every field. This data can be used in many ways, including to help us better understand human behavior, identify public health issues, interpret geographic information, and the entertainment industry. Humanities scholars also use large amounts of data for discoveries. However, the technology currently used by the humanities is behind other fields. Together digital humanities and knowledge discovery comprise an interdisciplinary area of study that draws on multiple domains, most notably computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics. Modern digital humanities methods and tools, especially data mining, are devoted to studying past and present societies. By proposing a technological approach to traditional issues in cultural studies, digital humanities demand more sensitive and responsible treatment for knowledge about culture through digital sources. Hence, finding more advanced research and development in this field is crucially important.
This special issue focuses on the practical aspects of using data mining and machine learning tools for humanities research. It will cover: the basics of digital humanities, what knowledge discovery is and how it applies to various domains of digital humanities, how data mining is used in this domain, and explore some issues researchers face when attempting to perform a data-driven analysis.
